Is there a point and purpose to maintaining and preserving the shitboxes of yesterday, or should they all be left to rot?

Let's not hate too hard on shitboxes. The world needs them. Some lucky folks out there will get new cars as their first car, but not everyone will be able to pull this feat. If you have parents who had nothing, your first car (hell, your first few cars) are likely to be unremarkable shitboxes, who's only value is to safely get you from point a to b, and to keep you from turning into chunky salsa in a bad wreck if you get in one.

The world needs reliable and economical and unremarkable transportation. It also needs LeMans cars. It also need Concours D'Lemons cars that are not-ruined from rubbin' and racin'. Our auto culture is better for having them in it. All hail the almighty shitbox!

Yup, there's a point. We've lost way to many cars that're somewhat awesome just because people thought they was worth jack all. 70's and 80's Opels? (destroyed in banger races), 70's and 80's fords? (destroyed in banger races), old french cars suffered the same fate and don't even get me started on oldish saabs.

As for the 'murican cars? Let them all burn.. Nah, just shitting you, I think there are tons of 70's and 80's American cars we need to preserve. I know that there're lots of old "shitty" econoboxes I'd love to own, and not just econoboxes either.. The Buick Reatta and the Cadillac Allante comes to mind.. I know plenty of people hate them, but they are quirky(ish) cars, and someone needs to take care of them.

Is that a Turbo Shadow? Which is not a great car but not a shit box.

There's a point and purpose to maintaining and preserving at least a few examples of every car ever made. That includes all the shitboxes too, they are important part of automotive history.

Whatever we do, let's not outright destroy them for no good reason, as the Government did.

New drivers are going to need cars, aren't they?

Most parents will want them in something cheap, reliable, and most of all slow.

That's where those old-people-owned, well maintained 80s and 90s shitboxes become useful.

My friend and I recently had this discussion when I spotted an old Shelby Charger likely on its last legs.

"are those old enough now that we have to like them?"

The conclusion was "yes."

Once a car reaches a certain age, its impressive and heartwarming just to see it on the road, even if it was a FWD travesty despoiling not one, but TWO beloved automotive names in one fell swoop.
